Tracy Angelica Quartermaine is a fictional character on the popular ABC soap opera General Hospital. She is the daughter of the late, wealthy businessman, Edward Quartermaine and his late wife, Lila Quartermaine.
She was portrayed by actress Jane Elliot, who originated the role in 1978 and has played her intermittently since that time, primarily on General Hospital (1978–80, 1989-93, 1996, 2003–17, 2019–present) and briefly on The City (1996–97). Briefly in 1989, while Jane Elliot was on maternal leave, Christine Jones took on the role.
Although she retired in 2017; Elliot reprised the role from December 23, 2019 to February 4, 2020 replacing Ely Pouget as Jeanette Marino before being replaced by Andi Chapman as Dolores Maloney, Dan Buran as Linc Brown before the character's arrest, Jeff Kober as Cyrus Renault, and Vic Stagliano as Franco Walker before the character's death. She returned again from November 30, 2020 to January 29, 2021 after Kelly Thiebaud returned as Britt Westbourne before the character's death. She was next seen from January 3 to February 2, 2022. She returned on April 18, 2023 on contract.
Casting[]
The role of Tracy Quartermaine was originated by actress Jane Elliot in June 1978. After two years with the series, Eliot left the role in June 1980. The actress later reflected the on the decision to leave, citing an insult from executive producer Gloria Monty over a salary dispute as the reason for her departure.
In December 1988, after months of rumors, it was announced that Elliot would reprise of the Tracy. She returned on screen on March 17, 1989.
Later that year, Elliot went on maternity leave, and veteran soap opera actress, Christine Jones assumed the role of Tracy that November. Jones portrayed the role for about a month, before Elliot's return.
Elliot left the series once again in 1993, last appearing on June 16. She briefly returned to the series from June 26 to October 7, 1996.
Later in 1996, it was announced that Elliot would bring the role of Tracy to fellow ABC soap opera, The City. The decision was an attempt to garner interest in the series, after the departure of lead actress Morgan Fairchild.
Elliot remarked, "It was all the network's idea. Morgan was leaving and it was a very big loss for the show. It was already in the works that I was returning to General Hospital for a while" The City was canceled in 1997, to make room for the General Hospital spin-off, Port Charles. Elliot remained with the series through its finale on March 28, 1997. In 2003, it was announced that Elliot would once again be reprising the role on General Hospital. She returned on April 15, 2003.
Elliot won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1981. She was nominated for the same award in 1993, and again in 2014, although she didn't win.
On March 8, 2017; Soap Opera Digest reported that Elliot would be retiring and leaving the series when her contract expires in the Spring.
On April 12, 2017; Elliot's last air date was confirmed to be May 4.
On April 28, 2017; General Hospital aired a special stand-alone episode dedicated to Tracy and her many years on the show. A portrait of Tracy left was unveiled at this time.
On November 21, 2019; it was revealed that Elliot would be returning to GH as Tracy sometime in December for the Holidays. She returned from December 23, 2019 to February 4, 2020.
On November 18, 2020; Soap Opera News announced that Elliot will return to GH again for the Holidays. She returned from November 30, 2020 to January 29, 2021.
On December 14, 2021; Nancy Lee Grahn hinted that Elliot was back at the studio and will return to GH as Tracy sometime in early 2022. She returned from January 3 to February 2, 2022 before being replaced by Scott Hamm and an unknown actor as armed robbers Eric Watson and Harry DeFranco before they were replaced by a single unknown actor as an unnamed serial killer who goes by "The Hook" concealing their face and identity for most of 2022 until New Year's Eve 2023 who was later revealed to be Heather Webber after the death of Jason Morgan on Cassadine Island via tunnel collapse.
On January 11, 2023; it was revealed that Elliot will return to GH as Tracy sometime in early April for the show's 60th anniversary after Heather aka "The Hook"'s arrest. It was also revealed that her return will be a long-term stay this time.
On March 13, 2023; it was confirmed that Elliot will officially return as Tracy on April 17. However, due to a preemption, her return was pushed back a day. She returned from April 18 to November 8, 2023 on a short-term contract after the death and will reading of Victor Cassadine and Cyrus Renault's release from prison.

On December 23, Tracy comes back to Port Charles to be with her son Ned who was formerly the Mayor of Port Charles in time for the story being read to the children at General Hospital by her sister-in-law Monica, and she also sees Finn's daughter Violet for the first time over six months after her son Ned's female counterpart Margaux Dawson resigned as District Attorney now living in Seattle.
On April 3, Tracy meets up with Stella Henry and asks her for a game of backgammon and Stella accepts.
