Actor Maurice Benard has portrayed the role, that of a manic depressive mob boss living in Port Charles, since the character's storyline originated on August 13, 1993.
He is the brother of attorney Ric Lansing, father of Dante Falconeri with Olivia Falconeri, the late Morgan Corinthos with Carly Spencer, Kristina Davis with Alexis Davis, and Avery Jerome-Corinthos with Ava Jerome. He is also the uncle of Molly Lansing-Davis who is now T.J. Ashford's domestic partner.
Storylines[]
In early 2007 Sonny still in love with his ex-wife Carly discovers Jax and Carly have become engaged, though she is disappointed when Jax leaves town to help his wayward brother Jerry Jacks. Preying on this, Sonny is caught in a legal dilemma when Carly witnesses him shoot Lorenzo Alcazar in self-defense, and forces her to marry him temporarily, so they don't have to testify against each other in court. While attending a party at the hotel she owns with Jax, Carly and several other Port Charles residences are taken hostage by the mysterious James Craig who is really Jerry Jacks in disguise except his children Michael, Morgan, and Kristina his infant niece Molly, and Diane Miller as they became scared of him after A.J.'s death and at the scene are commissioner Mac Scorpio, his brother district attorney/hostage negotiator Ric Lansing, Mayor Garrett Floyd, and the S.W.A.T. team. Sonny declares his love for Carly, and when the two survive the hostage crisis, they make love as the aftermath left Sonny's children Michael, Morgan, and Kristina traumatized along with attorney Diane Miller as Mayor Floyd was interviewed by the press as security at Metro Court Hotel is being tightened to take more security measures and Jake Spencer was born three months later. Sonny is heart broken when Carly divorces him and marries Jax right after their divorce was finalized while his niece Molly later is in the hands of his brother Ric through the court who was awarded sole custody much as to Diane being Molly's babysitter.
Even though, the damage to ELQ was done by Sonny's enemies, Sonny was so sorry that he and Shawn Butler could've defended ELQ. Instead, Sonny had been sentenced to Pentonville where Jerry Jacks was supposed to be at, not going out on the loose. But after his escape and heroism after his son Michael gave the bomb to him, he threw it into the water and Sonny could've gotten to Helena Cassadine when he had the chance. Afterwards, Sonny was given a full pardon by the governor of the state of New York.
By early 2016, Sonny no longer required a wheelchair, but didn't want to get out yet because he didn't want his enemies to know he was back and ready for action. However, in February, when a man with Helena's instincts attacked Julian and Alexis' wedding and then took Kristina hostage cursing everyone under the late Helena Cassadine's spirit, Sonny got up from his wheelchair and took the culprit down, shocking everyone leaving his own brother/attorney Ric Lansing not surprised along with Shawn Butler about what happened and everybody's constitutional rights have been violated. Not even Mayor Janice Lomax who had no skills of being a hostage negotiator where she was left outraged as the aftermath lead him and everyone being interviewed and debriefed by district attorney and Jerry's accomplice Paul Hornsby as security at the All Saints Church has been tightened to take more security measures as well as Mayor Lomax was being interviewed by the press leaving Jordan's son T.J. unharmed along with former Head Nurse Epiphany Johnson because her Janice's involvement of complicity to violate everybody's constitutional rights were revealed because she was in complicity. Then came the will reading of Helena Cassadine at Wyndemere on Spoon Island one month later on March 14 in which Sonny does not attend because it would remind him of his own nightmares.
After the will reading, Sonny decided to go to civil court in a lawsuit against Mayor Janice Lomax who violated everybody's constitutional rights including his son Morgan who was unable to testify against Mayor Lomax because of him being committed at Freedman Clinic leading to T.J. Ashford and Epiphany Johnson testifying on Morgan's behalf with judge James Horowitz presiding when his attorney/brother Ric decided to take action against her as Sonny is with the American Civil Liberties Union along with his daughter Kristina, his niece Molly, and his daughter Kristina's mother Alexis.
It was revealed in January 2017 that Olivia Jerome was the one responsible for Morgan's death as well as Robin's abduction. On March 15, 2017; Olivia Jerome was arrested after he and Carly found Olivia at the cemetery as the culprit along with her accomplice Winston Rudge who bores an uncanny resemblance to Valentin Cassadine. Sonny was granted immunity through the district attorney and his attorney Ric Lansing.
On October 24; Sonny came face to face with a man with Jason's exact old face, who claims to be Jason as he correctly remembers things from his life and said that he had gone missing five years ago replaced by his father-in-law Julian Jerome. Soon, everyone (except Jason) would believe that the man was Jason, especially after he and Sonny helped diffuse an armed hostage situation at the Metro Court by the two suspects as two of Cesar Faison's men who were later arrested, lawyered up, pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole offscreen by Judge Natalie Rawles saving his son Michael's biological grandmother Monica and the others leaving his son Dante's partner Nathan West unharmed along with General Hospital Art Therapist Franco Baldwin who denied any involvement. Sonny was awarded the Medal of Valor by Commissioner Jordan Ashford for saving everybody's lives. Nearly two months after the crime at the Metro Court Hotel, Mayor Janice Lomax appeared at Charlie's Pub for the Charles Street redevelopment project before her resignation as mayor of Port Charles where his niece Molly was there along with T.J. Ashford.
In February 2018; Sonny and Jason attempt to pursue Cesar Faison, but Sonny was denied from going after Faison by the police because it would cause him to commit obstruction of justice as Jason does it on Sonny's behalf defending Carly. The aftermath led to the deaths of Cesar Faison and Nathan West.
In March 2018; the earthquake hits Port Charles one month after the deaths of Cesar Faison and Nathan West as Sonny survived along with Max, Milo, Ric, and Shawn. The result was the phone lines are dead and he can't call Robin in Berkeley and there also have been some looters.
On June 21, 2019; Sonny has not yet heard the news that Jerry Jacks had escaped from prison since.
In April of 2023; Sonny and his family and friends knows that his daughter Avery's former step great-great uncle Victor Cassadine and has taken Liesl Obrecht, Spencer Cassadine, and Ace Cassadine hostage on the Haunted Star. Sonny and his people needed to work with the P.C.P.D. to help find the Haunted Star and eliminate Victor's men and women and rescue the hostages. He and the others discovered that the Haunted Star is in Greenland as Sonny was attempting to go rescue Spencer and Trina, but Sonny and his people were told by the WSB and the Port Charles Police Department to stay back in Port Charles for his own safety because it was too dangerous for him as Victor's men and women's actions always leaves Ava and their daughter Avery unharmed.
On May 30-31, Sonny does not attend the will reading of his nephew Spencer's great-great uncle Victor Cassadine along with his daughter Avery when Victor's attorney and executor J.B. Brown was present.
Sonny was expecting a great nephew or niece, but later miscarried.
On February 8; Sonny meets Jagger Cates again now Agent John Cates 30 years later finding out that Sonny was targeted by a shooter who is currently unseen concealing his face, identity, and physical appearance after the presumed deaths of Spencer Cassadine and Esme Prince in the Seine River in Paris.
On August 22, Sonny does not attend Irene Lansing-Ashford's funeral at the All Saints Chapel. Sonny was minding his own business as he's at the Jerome Gallery with Ava talking about Ava's safety against Jagger Cates while Sonny's brother Ric is attending the funeral on Sonny and Shawn's behalf.
On November 8, Sonny became furious offscreen when the warehouse blew up with a bomb by warlord Jenz Sidwell. Considering Sidwell as Sonny's new enemy.Crimes Committed[]
