Shawn Butler

Shawn Butler is a fictional character on General Hospital.

He was portrayed by actor Sean Blakemore from October 10, 2006 to May 27, 2015. He returned for more later in the year until March 21, 2022 before being since replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine and Scarlett Fernandez as Charlotte Cassadine before the characters left town and disappeared two years later on July 17, 2024 and later replaced by Carlo Rota as Jenz Sidwell a month later on August 30 before the character ran off and fled on November 8.

Blakemore previously portrayed the short term character, Chase Wright in 2003.

Casting and characterization[]

Actor Sean Blakemore, who previously portrayed the short term character of Chase Wright in 2003, and was known for his small roles on soap operas such as Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless, returned to General Hospital and originated the role of Shawn Butler on October 10, 2006 on a recurring basis. In January, it was reported that Blakemore had signed a contract with the series.

When Blakemore started to appear less frequently in February 2012, many fans were led to believe Blakemore had been let go. It was later revealed that Blakemore had taken some time off to shoot a movie.

During an interview with BE Magazine in October 2011, Blakemore discusses his character. He describes Shawn as someone with professional skills, but also a man with a lot of personal issues.

Blakemore also states,

He is a bad boy turned good. He finds it hard to try to win over people who he comes in contact with, as far as trying to prove himself to them considering his past. —Blakemore BE Interview

In 2012, Blakemore was nominated for his first Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

On May 18, 2015; Frank Valentini broke the news that Blakemore would be exiting the role. Blakemore also confirmed his exit on Twitter. He made his last appearance on May 27, 2015 before being replaced by Sonya Eddy as Epiphany Johnson before her death in 2022.

On November 18, 2015; Frank Valentini tweeted that Blakemore will be back as Shawn. He returned for only one episode on November 19, 2015. He was seen talking to Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig).

He returned as Shawn with a full pardon and exoneration after Jerry Jacks (Sebastian Roché)'s arrest.

On February 25, 2022; it was revealed that Blakemore will once again exit GH as Shawn. Blakemore revealed that it was his choice to leave due to other obligations. His final air-date was on March 21, 2022. He is later since replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine and Scarlett Fernandez as Charlotte Cassadine before they left town and disappeared and later replaced by Carlo Rota as Jenz Sidwell a month later in 2024, as well as Charles Shaughnessy as Victor Cassadine and later Rafael Cabrera as Gavin Crawford and Maria Tornberg as Renee Laveque before the characters' deaths in 2023, then Adam J. Harrington as John Cates (previously Jagger Cates) before the character's death and later Rick Hearst as Ric Lansing in 2024.

Storylines[]

On October 10, 2006; Shawn comes into Port Charles.

In February 2007 during the Metro Court Hotel hostage crisis; Shawn befriends district attorney and hostage negotiator Ric Lansing, Commissioner Mac Scorpio, Mayor Garrett Floyd, Detectives Delores Padilla and James Scorpio, and the S.W.A.T. team with captain Gerald Brodin as Shawn is revealed that he's a former marine.

On December 22, after Jerry Jacks was taken by the WSB agents to Pentonville Penitentiary for Jerry's crimes against Robin and the citizens of Port Charles, Shawn gets released from Pentonville thanks to Anna, Robert, and James.

Robin's look-alike Hayden Barnes helped his friend Curtis Ashford get all the proof against Nikolas Cassadine to prove Shawn is innocent.

On January 8 after Patrick, Robin, and Emma moved away to Berkley, California; Shawn moves into 1938 Elm Street in Queens Point. On a wedding disaster where Landon Dixon was there under the spirits of the late Kyle Sloane and the late Helena Cassadine. When Dixon was holding a chapel-full of people hostage, he and his lawyer Ric were not surprised because Dixon was in revenge for the late Kyle Sloane and the late Helena Cassadine in violating everybody's constitutional rights under the orders of Mayor Janice Lomax. Shawn called his lawyer Ric that they're coming for Sonny.

After it was over, he goes to civil court unharmed along with T.J. and his lawyer Ric who were also unharmed along with Mayor Janice Lomax who committed complicity to violate everybody's constitutional rights to get revenge for the late Kyle Sloane. The judge he sees in civil court is James Horowitz because Mayor Lomax outraged by the crime at the All Saints Church because she had no skills of being a hostage negotiator and he knew that Shawn is an advocate for the American Civil Liberties Union along with his attorney Ric with T.J. testifying against Mayor Lomax on Morgan's behalf.

In July 2016, Shawn goes to Cassadine Island in Greece with Sonny staying behind in Port Charles and gains a new enemy Valentin Cassadine one month after Janice Lomax was last seen. He found out that Cassadine Island was too dangerous for him when Valentin was holding hostages. Shawn calls the Greek authorities, Interpol, and Sonny. He also told Sonny not to engage on Valentin and needed to stay put in Port Charles. He also found out that Shawn is an ex-marine and Mayor Lomax had no skills of being a hostage negotiator. After the hostages escaped except Nikolas; the Greek authorities arrest Valentin's men as Valentin escapes while Shawn sees Sam, Jason, Ava, Dante, Lulu, Laura, and Kevin. They head back to Port Charles and heads to General Hospital with the help of Interpol and the Coast Guard. At General Hospital, he and his friends meets Dr. Hamilton Finn who was new there and have them treat them for malaria except Shawn.

On August 9, Shawn is happy that Shiloh is in custody so that he and his friends can have peace as Dawn of Day is shut down.

On August 12, Shawn became discouraged when Franco calls himself Andrew Cain via memory transfer after he saved Cameron Webber.

On February 6, 2020; Shawn meets Emma one week after the three shootings like two in Port Charles and one in Brooklyn occurred by his new enemy Cyrus Renault in revenge for the late Cesar Faison, the late Shiloh, and the late Cassandra Pierce and over four months after Shiloh's death.

On the week of August 3, Shawn was surprised to see Cyrus Renault at General Hospital along with Chief of Staff and Michael's grandmother Monica and Port Charles Mayor Laura Collins. He agrees with Monica and Laura when Cyrus was trying to make a partnership with General Hospital as they refuse to accept the offer of Cyrus' partnership much as to his, Sonny, Jason, and Sam's dismay.

On March 21, Shawn moves to San Francisco. Over two weeks later, Shawn is now since replaced by Valentin Cassadine on April 6 and later moves into 1938 Elm Street in Queens Point.

Nearly one year later on March 3, 2023; T.J. mentions that his father called to wish him and Molly a happy anniversary and Shawn wasn't surprised to hear that Alexis figured out who The Hook was.

Nearly another year later on February 19, 2024; Valentin bought The Invader from Shawn making him new owner and Nina Reeves new publisher and former Mayor Janice Lomax approves and was later hired by Valentin as receptionist at The Invader.

On August 22, Shawn does not attend his granddaughter Irene Lansing-Ashford funeral at the All Saints Chapel. He was busy in San Francisco minding his own business. So, he sent his attorney Ric Lansing to attend it on Shawn's behalf the same day that FBI Special Agent John Cates (previously Jagger Cates) came to the Jerome Gallery to protect and defend Ava Jerome after Valentin Cassadine and his daughter Charlotte Cassadine left town and disappeared a month earlier on July 17.
