Lesley Lu "Lulu" Spencer is a fictional character on the ABC daytime soap opera General Hospital. She is the daughter of legendary supercouple Luke and Laura Spencer, mother of Rocco Falconeri and Charlotte Cassadine, aunt of Spencer Cassadine and Ace Cassadine, and the stepcousin of the late Esme Prince who is the daughter of two psychotic serial killers the late Ryan Chamberlain who is Lulu's uncle and Heather Webber aka The Hook.
She was born onscreen on August 8, 1994.
The role was most notably portrayed by actress Julie Marie Berman from October 2005 to March 2013. It was announced, on March 6, 2013, that actress Emme Rylan would be Berman's replacement and she made her first appearance on April 11, 2013. Rylan made her last appearance on December 1, 2020 after she had been let go from the series.
She was later replaced by Avery Kristen Pohl as Esme Prince starting on August 16, 2021 until the character's presumed death on January 31, 2024.
On September 10, 2024; it was confirmed that the role of Lulu has been recast with former All My Children alum, Alexa Havins replacing Avery Kristen Pohl as Esme Prince, Adam J. Harrington as John Cates after the character's death, Carlo Rota as Jenz Sidwell when the character ran off and fled.
Casting[]
Lulu has been portrayed by several child actresses, since her on-screen birth in August 1994:
Twins Amanda and Kerrianne Harrington from 1994-95.
Twins Clare and Maribel Moses from March-September 1995.
Twins Alysin and Kelli Griffith from 1995 to 2001.
Stephanie Allen from September 11, 2001 to December 23, 2003.
Child actress Tessa Allen stepped into the role on April 19, 2004 and last appeared on June 17, 2005.
Julie Marie Berman joined the cast of General Hospital in the fall of 2005 as a SORASed Lulu, making her first appearance on October 28, 2005.
The casting immediately garnered much attention to due to Berman's strong resemblance to Genie Francis, who played Laura; Lulu and Laura's strong resemblance was often mentioned within the series.
In July 2012, Berman informed producers that she had no plans of renewing her contract when it expired in November. Despite no official word from ABC or Berman, rumors began to circulate that Berman was about to vacate the role. After months of speculation, on February 26, 2013; an issue of Soaps In Depth confirmed that Berman was indeed leaving the series and had just filmed her final scenes.
On February 27, 2013; Julie confirmed her exit on Twitter:
- "Hi everyone...yesterday was one of the hardest days of my life. It hurts to let go of Lulu. Thank u for letting me into ur homes & hearts. X"
Her last appearance was on March 22, 2013.
During her time as Lulu, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress in 2007 and brought home two Daytime Emmy's for Outstanding Younger Actress in 2009 and 2010 and one for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2013.
Characterization
- "As the product of the town's greatest love story, Lulu has a lot to live up to. Growing up virtually without both her parents hasn't been easy, but Lulu's slowly learning to move beyond her rebellious teen years. And while Lulu has admirers fighting over her left and right, the only guy she really wants in her life is her father."
The writers originally introduce the teen-aged Lulu as being "very rebellious and independent and open-minded as well," leaving Berman and the writers a lot of leeway to develop the character and figure out what works for her.
The character of Lulu is often very feisty, and can at times come off as fearless.
According to Berman, Lulu is anything but fearless, though she manages to hide her fear by mouthing off. Most significantly, Lulu has problems keeping her mouth shut when she and several others are taken hostage by Jerry Jacks (Sebastian Roché) at The Metro Court Hotel in February 2007; Berman explains that Lulu's comments come from a genuine place of survival, and as long as she can help it, she will never appear weak all thanks to Commissioner Mac Scorpio (John J. York), Mayor Pres Floyd (John Bolger), S.W.A.T. team, and the FBI.
Being the first adult performer in the role also allows Berman to put her own unique spin on the character, giving her specific strengths and weaknesses, adding more layers to the character. Berman describes Lulu as being "young and naive" one day, and "extremely wise and mature" the next day.
Lulu comes out of every situation, and hardship in her life having learned something which Berman believes makes Lulu seem more "human" as apposed to appearing as a "hero" or "anti-hero," she's right in the middle which allows for the character to be easily redeemed when she messes up. However, Berman has expressed her desire to take the character a bit darker.
Following her first Daytime Emmy win in 2009, Berman describes Lulu as being "a bulldozer," being "unlucky in love" which makes the character so much more "endearing." Berman sees Lulu as being one of the few characters who actually learns from her mistakes and does not repeat them.
On March 6, 2013; TV Guide's Michael Logan hinted that an actor from General Hospital would be joining the cast of The Young and the Restless while a Y&R alum would be coming to GH on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Jamey Giddens of Daytime Confidential reported that several sources said Emme Rylan, formerly known for her roles on Guiding Light as Lizzie Spaulding (2006-09) and The Young and the Restless as Abby Newman (2010-13), had been cast as Lulu, but nothing was official at the time.
Several sources including Soap Opera Digest later confirmed that the reports were indeed true.
Rylan took to Twitter and confirmed her first air date at April 11, 2013.
On December 16, 2016; Rylan announced via Instagram that she and fiancé, Don Money are expecting their third child, a daughter, due in June. On June 26, 2017; daughter Dakota Rose Money was born.
During a live tweet session during GH on February 7, 2017, Rylan revealed that her pregnancy will not be written into the show nor will she be taking any time off after the baby is born so her story line won't be missing a beat.
Rylan was last seen on July 11, 2017 and returned on August 25, 2017.
On July 27, Rylan announced via Instagram that she will start taping five weeks postpartum, as she gave birth during GH 's three week hiatus.
On August 1, 2017; Rylan revealed on Instagram that she is back at work.
Although she had announced she had signed a new contract in February 2019, Rylan temporarily went off screen in April. She was last seen as Lulu on April 8, 2019 and returned on April 26, 2019.
On October 27, 2020; Daytime Confidential and Celebrating the Soaps reported a rumor that Emme Rylan was out as Lulu Spencer.
On October 29, 2020; Rylan hinted on Instagram that the rumors of her being let go from GH are true, but she couldn't confirm the news directly. Rylan said, "I am not...in a position to be able to comment on the work stuff, so in terms of General Hospital, I'm going to keep that topic quiet.” She eventually added, "No, I did not choose–this."
She made her last appearance on December 1, 2020. She was later replaced by Avery Kristen Pohl as Esme Prince.
Almost three years later, Lulu made a one-episode appearance on July 28, 2023. However, Lulu was only seen from the waist down as she's seen to still be in a coma while Dante accompanied Charlotte who visited her at the long-term care facility where she's still being treated.
On July 28, 2023; Soaps.com revealed that Lulu will return but it's unclear if they'll recast the role or if Rylan or Julie Marie Berman will return.
On August 16, 2023; Rylan revealed that she could return to GH as Lulu if they ever called, but she understood that things could change.
On August 5, 2024; a potential recast Lulu Spencer casting call was made for the character of "Lauren". She is described as, "34 to 40 years old and a blonde, white woman. She is beautiful, dynamic, and fiery. The character has overcome challenging circumstances and is now stronger and more determined than ever." "Lauren" will begin taping mid-September.
On August 6, 2024; it was confirmed that Lulu would be returning to the canvas with a new yet-to-be-announced actress in the role. Emme Rylan confirmed on her Instagram that Lulu is being recast. As of August 31, 2024; Jennifer Landon, Daytime Emmy winner for As the World Turns, is rumored to be a recast of Lulu Spencer.
On September 10, 2024; it was revealed that former All My Children alum, Alexa Havins will join the cast as the new Lulu. Her first air-date is unknown.
Havins' first day onscreen as Lulu was November 19, 2024 replacing Avery Kristen Pohl as Esme Prince after the character's presumed death, Adam J. Harrington as John Cates after the character's death, and Carlo Rota as Jenz Sidwell after the character ran off and fled Port Charles. Background[]
She is divorced from Det. Dante Falconeri and together they have a son named Rocco, who was born via surrogate in September of 2013 who was carried by the late Dr. Britt Westbourne who is Maxie's sister-in-law. Through her marriage to Dante, she gained Sonny Corinthos and Olivia Quartermaine as her in-laws. She also has a daughter named Charlotte with Valentin Cassadine, who was born via surrogate in May of 2009 making Charlotte the granddaughter of the late Helena Cassadine.
The couple got married for the first time on December 23, 2011 (Christmas Eve on the show) in Bensonhurst with Olivia as their only guest and witness. After a few issues in their marriage, Dante and Lulu decide to divorce but on March 4, 2016, after receiving their finalized divorce papers, they decided to spend the rest of their lives together. Dante and Lulu were remarried in the living room of their new home on November 23, 2016 (Thanksgiving Day on the show). Laura, Olivia, Rocco, Maxie, Nathan and Kevin attended the ceremony.
In December 2016, Lulu meets her daughter, Charlotte. In March 2017, Valentin (and Nina) and Lulu (and Dante) started a custody battle with both wanting sole custody and joint custody not being on the table. The battle ended with Valentin getting sole custody and Lulu supervised visitation (one hour a week). It was also mentioned that in 6 months custody will be revisited just like Maxie Jones who was seeing Judge David Walters returning the favor revealing that Valentin and Charlotte have gained Mayor Janice Lomax as their friend and supporter.
In June 2017, Dante and Lulu were granted temporary custody of Charlotte, since her father was going to prison after the armed robbery at the Floating Rib by Chris and Paul Gentry. However, on July 11, her father was released by the WSB, and returned to Port Charles and made it clear that he plans to get custody back but for now he has temporary visitation (revealed on July 18). In October 2017, it was revealed that Valentin and Lulu now have shared custody.
In late 2018, Lulu no longer trusts Nina with Charlotte because she has been spoiling her endlessly without any discipline, which caused Charlotte to think it was okay to bully her cousin Aiden making Charlotte have her late grandmother Helena Cassadine's genes who Charlotte had never gotten to meet because Helena has been deceased.
In November 2005, Lulu is "diagnosed" with Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome and is aged to 17.
Her former enemy turned best friend is Maxie Jones.
On December 9, 2022; it is revealed that Esme Prince is Lulu's brunette stepcousin as Esme is revealed to be the daughter of two psychotic serial killers, the late Ryan Chamberlain and the imprisoned Heather Webber aka "The Hook".
On January 31, 2024; Lulu's brunette stepcousin Esme is presumed deceased along with her nephew Spencer Cassadine in Seine River in Paris the same day that the sniper named Ron Gallo grazed Ava Jerome's hand on The Island in Puerto Rico putting Avery Jerome-Corinthos in the line of fire.
Storylines[]
In November 2006, just in time for the 25th anniversary of her first wedding to Luke, Laura awakes from her catatonic state with the help of Dr. Robin Scorpio and Dr. Patrick Drake. Luke and Laura renew their wedding vows in a fake ceremony, as Luke knows that she will return to her catatonic state after several weeks and he is unwilling to divorce Tracy. Flooded with guilt about her abortion, Lulu confides in her mother about not wanting to bring a baby into a world where it wasn't loved or wanted, much like Lulu felt growing up without her. After assuring Lulu that she was both loved and wanted, Laura reveals that she doesn't believe she killed Rick Webber and returns to catatonia. Lulu becomes involved in Port Charles' mob community, helping mob boss Sonny Corinthos and his partner Jason Morgan track down teenage hacker Damian Spinelli, who had worked for rival Lorenzo Alcazar. With Dillon's help, Lulu begins to investigate Rick's murder in the hope of clearing Laura's name.
Former Port Charles resident Jerry Jacks, disguised through plastic surgery as James Craig, takes several people hostage in the Metro Court hotel with the aide of several mercenaries. Craig locks Lulu in a room with Alan Quartermaine, and Lulu questions him about his role in Rick's death as all of her evidence points to Alan and his wife Monica Quartermaine as being involved. Alan reveals that he knows who the real killer is, but dies from complications due to a heart attack before he can tells Lulu who the real murderer is. Lulu manages to escape from the Metro Court after a bomb destroys the hotel lobby. Jerry's accomplices were Sonny's rival Lorenzo Alcazar who had started the crime, serial killer Franco Baldwin, Faison's son Sonny Faison, Tracy's ex-husband Paul Hornsby, and Liesl Obrecht. The aftermath left Sonny's children Michael, Morgan, and Kristina traumatized along with attorney Diane Miller, commissioner Mac Scorpio, and district attorney/hostage negotiator Ric Lansing where the S.W.A.T. team, Dr. Russell Ford who later becomes the Chief of Staff at General Hospital, and Head Nurse Epiphany Johnson are there as Mayor Garrett Floyd was interviewed by the press as security at Metro Court Hotel was tightened to take more security measures and Jake Spencer was born three months later. She intercepts a letter from Alan to her father that reveals Scott Baldwin, Laura's first husband and a longtime rival of Luke, had actually murdered Rick. Fearing the news would destroy her father and that he would kill Scott, Lulu decides to keep the information between her and Dillon. In late 2015, she testifies in court against Jerry Jacks and his accomplices of committing crimes against the citizens of Port Charles and Robin with the presiding judge David Walters who had been promoted from family court judge to civil court judge and criminal court judge after handling the Avery Jerome-Corinthos case as Lulu's father-in-law Sonny was disabled by Jerry's accomplice Paul Hornsby who later became the district attorney. She also knew that David was Monica's ex-boyfriend. Her testimony was successful along with all the other citizens as Jerry was sentenced to life in prison at Pentonville Penitentiary.
On July 6, Lulu and Maxie gets a visit from the founder of KFC Harland Sanders.
On July 19, she and Dante are getting a divorce the same day that Hank Archer aka Shiloh who bores a striking resemblance to the late Nathan West made bail. She and James Scorpio grew closer together as friends.
On August 9, she sticks with her marriage and spoke to Willow Tait about Shiloh as she wants to run a story for The Invader on Dawn of Day as it's about to be shut down as Shiloh was taken into custody along with his accomplice Dr. Arthur Cabot who was also arrested for aiding and abetting Shiloh since Shiloh bore a striking resemblance to the late Detective Nathan West.Crimes Committed[]
