Dr. Britta "Britt" Westbourne, MD was a fictional character on General Hospital. She was the daughter of supervillains the late Cesar Faison and Dr. Liesl Obrecht.
She was portrayed by actress Kelly Thiebaud in varying stints from 2012 to 2023.
The late, Det. Nathan West was her brother (it was revealed in 2018, that Britt and Nathan were full siblings) and Maxie Jones is her sister-in-law. It was also revealed in 2018, that she had a half-brother named Henrik Faison.
Brad Cooper is her best friend before her death by The Hook who was later revealed to be Heather Webber returning the favor to the late Cesar Faison five years later.
Casting and creation[]
Actress Kelly Thiebaud first auditioned for an unspecified contract role, but the producers of General Hospital felt that she wasn't right for the part. However, they were impressed by her and decided to give her the part of a recurring character that they were in the process of writing, who they characterized as a doctor. Thiebaud described the casting process as a "surprise". She debuted as Dr. Britt Westbourne on September 19, 2012. Thiebaud previously had minor acting credits on the NBC Daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives and the CBS primetime series Criminal Minds. Apart from her acting work, she also modeled and appeared in four music videos for French disc jockey David Guetta.
A month into filming, Thiebaud received news that she had been placed on contract. During an interview with Star Pulse, she confessed that she was shocked, because she felt that she wasn't doing well in the role due to nerves, in addition to the fast-paced nature of the genre. In February 2013, Soap Opera Digest confirmed that the actress had been upgraded to a contract status. In early 2013, Thiebaud fractured her femur and was forced to sport crutches. Instead of resting the character, head writer Ron Carlivati wrote it into the script as Britt suffering a fall in the hospital parking lot at the possible hands of Frisco Jones (Jack Wagner), the father of Maxie Jones, whom Britt blackmailed. Thiebaud thanked Carlivati and executive producer Frank Valentini for letting her "crutch on TV".
On November 10, 2014; it was reported that Thiebaud had been placed on recurring status following the conclusion of her two-year contract, in order to pursue other acting opportunities. However, it later appeared that Thiebaud would be exiting the series, and her last scenes aired on December 8, with Britt leaving town. Her departure was not confirmed until this date.
Upon the airing of her final scenes, the actress revealed on Instagram,
- "I decided not to [re-sign] my contract because I would like to book other roles on prime time shows and film", and described her experience on the soap as "(sic) a fun and challenging adventure".
From April 30-May 1, 2015; Kelly Thiebaud reprised her role as Britt for the 2015 Nurses Ball. She said that "It was just a case of getting used to that [taping] speed again", and is open to future appearances before being replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine and Scarlett Fernandez as Charlotte Cassadine who also replaces Nikolas.
On November 17, 2017; Soap Opera Digest announced that Thiebaud would be reprising her role as Britt in December 2017. She appeared from December 8-19, 2017 (for a total of 4 episodes) before being replaced by Shari Belafonte as Janice Lomax a day later who appeared at Charlie's Pub for a town hall meeting and discussed the Charles Street redevelopment on December 20 before also being replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine.
On September 29, 2018; it was announced that Thiebaud will return to GH first appearing sometime in the coming months. It is unknown if this is a guest appearance, a recurring stint or a return to contract. Thiebaud returned on October 29, 2018 and left on November 29, 2018 and later replaced by Elizabeth Hendrickson as Margaux Dawson and later Coby Ryan McLaughlin as Hank Archer aka "Shiloh".
On March 4, 2020; it was revealed that Thiebaud would return to GH and was back in the studio filming new scenes. She returned at the end of the episode on March 11, 2020. She made her last appearance on April 1, 2020 before being replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine, Andi Chapman as Dolores Maloney, Dan Buran as Linc Brown, and Jeff Kober as Cyrus Renault.
On August 23, 2020; Soap Opera Digest announced that Thiebaud would be reprising her role as Britt for a longer stint this time. Thiebaud is on contract. She returned on September 11, 2020 replacing Andi Chapman as Dolores Maloney a month later.
On January 15, 2022; it was revealed that Thiebaud is taking time off of GH due to recovering from COVID.
On August 17, 2022; it was revealed that Thiebaud is leaving GH in November to return to Station 19.
On August 19, 2022; Thiebaud revealed on Instagram that she can do both GH and Station 19, but it's currently unclear if Thiebaud will be put on recurring or if she'll make a temporary exit.
In December 2022; it is revealed that Kelly is indeed leaving General Hospital and has moved to London and has since replaced by James Patrick Stuart as Valentin Cassadine before the character's disappearance, Noelle Messier as Ramona George for one episode, Rafael Cabrera as Gavin Crawford and Maria Tornberg as Renee Laveque before the characters' deaths, Nathanyael Grey as Mason Gatlin before the character's imprisonment, Charles Shaughnessy as Victor Cassadine before the character's death, Avery Kristen Pohl as Esme Prince before the character's presumed death a year later, Scarlett Fernandez as Charlotte Cassadine before the character's disappearance in 2024, Josh Swickard as Harrison Chase, Dan Buran as Linc Brown before the character's arrest, and later Darin Toonder as Dr. Damon Montague before the character's arrest.
Development[]
Storylines[]
Britt returned on December 8, 2017 and is seen with Jason Morgan and Sonny Corinthos after the crime at the Metro Court Hotel by her father Faison's men Frank Anderson and Greg Barnes who were in revenge for Faison leaving Mayor Janice Lomax outraged as well as leaving Nathan West and Franco Baldwin unharmed because Franco had an alibit at the time. After telling Sonny and Jason everything she knows about Faison and finding out how Ben (Rocco) is doing, Britt turns herself into the police as she is done running. On December 12, while in custody, she reunites with Nathan and finds out he's going to be a father. She also gives him advice on how to handle their mother. Afterwards, she's taken to a jail cell before Mayor Lomax reappeared for the Charles Street redevelopment project after a year and a half of her absence and being replaced by her supporters Valentin Cassadine and his own children Donald and Charlotte and Mayor Lomax resigned.
She then reunites with her mother again and promises not to turn in Faison (who will hurt her if she does) even though it could get her a reduced sentence. They end up talking about Nathan, Maxie, and the baby. She also promises that she will be back someday.
On March 12, 2018; Anna tells Griffin that Liesl told her she is relieved that Britt's Huntington's test came back negative because she did not attend Nathan's memorial service after the earthquake hit Port Charles over a month after the deaths of Nathan and Faison respectively.
On October 29, 2018; Britt is next seen when Anna and Finn go visit her in Pentonville and offer her a "get out of jail free" card if she helps catch her mother.
Britt leaves Port Charles to start a new life. Nearly a month later, the man who bores a striking resemblance to her late brother Nathan West Hank Archer aka "Shiloh" comes into Port Charles as a newcomer later revealed to be the leader of Dawn of Day and their operation was shut down nearly a year later.
On March 11, 2020; Britt comes back into Port Charles to see Brad after he plead guilty after her late brother's look-alike Shiloh's death, three separate shootouts and the kidnappings of Trina Robinson and Cameron Webber by Cyrus Renault who bores an uncanny resemblance to her late father Cesar Faison after Margaux Dawson left Port Charles and moved to Seattle and the death of Hank Archer aka "Shiloh".
On September 11, 2020; Britt was appointed as the new Chief of Staff by Chairman of the Board Cyrus Renault after her ex-cousin-in-law Valentin Cassadine became the CEO of ELQ who decided to stop funding for the hospital to let Cyrus become a partner and Chairman of the Board one month after Dolores Maloney was no longer Sam's parole officer.
On October 7, Jason comes to GH for a follow-up exam to a motorcycle accident. Mary knows about new Chief of Staff Britt Westbourne to Jason and she comes over to talk to him. She is sarcastic with him but he suggests that Britt do the exam. Mary asks him what he is up to when they are alone and he explains that he needs to see if Britt is really who Cyrus thinks she is.
It is revealed on October 23 that Britt is working directly for Cyrus and his men and women including Franco Walker as she calls him and she became Cyrus' new adoptive daughter.
After his exam, Jason keeps coming back to GH to work with Britt on finding out what Cyrus is up to with a new drug he is trying to get released. Jason starts to trust Britt and even smiles when she asks if he wants to help deliver candy to children on Valentines Day.
In May 2021, Jason and Britt go on the run together after he escapes custody because of Yuri Tamashevich and his friend Jerome Grisham as her mother secretly threatened Cyrus behind his back.
On May 12, Britt tells Jason that she thinks she has Huntington's Disease. Her father had it so there is a 50% chance she has it too. She lied to her mother when she told her she took the test and was negative.
When Dr. Monica Quartermaine returned to GH, she allowed Britt to keep her job but declared that both Britt and Dr. Terry Randolph would be named co-chiefs of staff at the hospital. After initially blowing up at sharing power, Britt settled down and made amends with those she upset.
Britt learned she indeed had Huntington’s disease and soon planned to leave town. As she awaited her boat on the docks; Josslyn Jacks was attacked by The Hook nearby concealing her face and identity wanting revenge for the late Cesar Faison and Jason unable to stop her as she is unknowingly working for the True Believers later revealed to be Heather Webber returning the favor to the late Cesar Faison. Britt leaped into action to help save her. Unfortunately, during the struggle, Britt was scratched with the hook, and made her way back to The Haunted Star to be with her mother as the venom killed her. Obrecht called for an ambulance, but Britt knew she wouldn’t make it to a hospital in time and died in her mother’s arms in January 2023 as she was later replaced by Victor Cassadine and his men and women including Gavin Crawford who is Roz Venta's male counterpart and Renee Laveque before their deaths.
After her death, Britt's portrait was added to the memorial wall at General Hospital. She was also later replaced by Linc Brown before his arrest at the Nurses' Ball by Dante Falconeri, and later by Damon Montague who Britt would not like because he would remind her of Cyrus after the birth of Ace Cassadine.Crimes Committed[]
